    Ranacultura is a hands-on, immersive study abroad program for adults seeking a deeper connection to Mexican language, history, and culture. Set in the magical city of Guanajuato, participants explore its colonial heritage, revolutionary history, and vibrant arts scene. Through immersive classes and workshops, lectures from local professionals, museum visits, optional language classes, and tours of Guanajuato’s landmarks, Ranacultura blends education with adventure, offering an authentic and transformative journey in one of Mexico’s most enchanting destinations.

    Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, Guanajuato is a UNESCO World Heritage city rich in history and vibrant color. The birthplace of Mexican Independence, this charming colonial town features colorful buildings, picturesque plazas, and stunning mountain views.  The University of Guanajuato as well as the International Cervantino Festival ensures a lively arts and music scene while exploring on cobblestone streets.

    This year’s trip, La Comida, delves into the rich flavors and history of Mexican cuisine. Through market visits, cooking classes, and tastings, we explore traditional dishes crafted with native Mesoamerican ingredients and their evolution through European influence. Learn how food shapes celebration, identity, and migration, tracing culinary traditions across time and place. From ancient methods to modern sustainability practices, this immersive journey honors the past while preserving the future of Mexico’s vibrant food culture.

    Meet Your Guide: Maura Furfey

    Maura is a passionate educator and linguist whose connection to Guanajuato began at 15 during a language immersion trip. That experience shaped both her personal and professional life. Maura studied Spanish and Anthropology and has been teaching high school Spanish and Culture for nearly 30 years. A National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, Maura has co-led cultural immersion programs with her mentor and is dedicated to creating travel experiences that connect language, history, and culture. It is her mission to provide opportunities for civic engagement, intellectual curiosity, and empathy.
