La Comida: A Taste of Mexico

La Comida

For Ranacultura’s Inaugural Cultural exploration of Guanajuato, we will focus on FOOD!

LA COMIDA as it relates to:

  • Indigenous ingredients and methods of preparation

  • Evolution of the dish as ingredients from Europe are introduced to the cuisine

  • Traditional healing

  • Practices of sustainability

  • Celebration and Community

As a group, we will read the book Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) as a vehicle to talk about these themes in relation to México’s History and Culture.  This best-selling novel by Laura Esquivel is a love story in which repressed emotions are expressed through food!  Each chapter tells the story of Tita through a recipe that she prepares.  In our book discussions, we will talk about that food preparation, as well as explore the themes of Revolution, Feminism, Independence, and its representation in art and music.
